Solar and battery

Solar and battery-storage electrical work across Thanet.

The electrical side of solar PV and battery installs across CT7-CT12. MCS-registered install partners handle the roof and inverter; we handle the consumer-unit upgrade, DC isolators, tie-in, commissioning and UK Power Networks Southern paperwork.

What we do

Solar PV needs an MCS-registered installer to unlock the Smart Export Guarantee tariff from your electricity supplier and to qualify for any future grant scheme. We work with MCS-registered install partners for the roof panels, mounts and inverter; we do the electrical tie-in ourselves: consumer-unit upgrade if needed, AC and DC isolators, hybrid inverter or storage battery commissioning, meter-and-monitoring setup, and UK Power Networks Southern G98 or G99 paperwork.

Battery retrofit to existing solar

A common Thanet scenario: PV panels fitted 2015-2020 with a string inverter, no battery. Adding a battery (Tesla Powerwall 3, Fox ESS ECS, GivEnergy AC-coupled or similar) needs:

  • AC-coupled inverter or hybrid inverter fitted to the existing PV DC feed.
  • Consumer-unit review - most 2015-era boards were sized for panels-only export, not battery cycling.
  • G99 notification to UKPN Southern for the new export capacity.
  • MCS certification updated so the SEG tariff continues to apply.

Retrofit typically takes 1-2 days once the DNO approval is back.

Conservation-area and listed-building notes

Most of Thanet allows domestic solar as permitted development, but the conservation areas - Margate Old Town, Broadstairs Old Town and North Foreland, Ramsgate West Cliff and East Cliff, parts of Kingsgate and St Peter's - remove permitted development rights for street-facing installations. A rear or side roof install usually still qualifies as PD. Listed buildings need consent from Thanet District Council building control regardless of position; we advise on the pre-application stage but the LBC is the owner's route to lodge.

DNO thresholds

  • Single-phase up to 3.68kW inverter, no battery: G98 connect-and-notify. Usable straight after commissioning.
  • Single-phase over 3.68kW, or any battery that can export: G99 approval required before energising. UKPN Southern turnaround typically 4-6 weeks in 2026.
  • Three-phase installs (rural Minster and some Manston-adjacent properties): always G99.

Solar in salt-heavy conditions

North-facing seafront installs collect more chloride than the panel manufacturers' inland test cycles account for. Framing corrodes at the mount points; MC4 connectors degrade faster on the exposed inverter side. We spec anodised aluminium mounts and re-inspect isolators at each EICR interval. Panel warranties are typically 25 years on output but 10-12 years on frame - factor that into the payback maths on the CT9 and CT11 seafronts.
