What you get. A new metal-enclosed consumer unit that meets BS 7671:2018 Amendment 2 - the 18th-edition Wiring Regulations - with an RCBO on every final circuit. That means an earth fault on the shower does not trip your fridge, and an overload on the kitchen ring does not take out the whole house. Why replacements are common on the Isle of Thanet

Three overlapping conditions push Thanet's fusebox stock harder than an inland Kent equivalent:

1. Salt-laden onshore wind. North-facing installs from Birchington through Cliftonville to Kingsgate see two decades of chloride carried inland by prevailing north-easterlies and the anticyclonic winds that dominate Kent's spring. Pitted metalwork on the meter tails is visible before the board itself fails.
2. Pre-1980 housing stock density. Margate and Ramsgate's Victorian and Edwardian terrace stock is dense. Boards installed in the 1970s and 1980s on those properties are now over 40 years old; wired-fuse boards from that era do not offer 30mA RCD protection to socket circuits and would not meet current EICR standards without extensive remedial work.
3. Plastic split-load boards from the 2000-2016 period. BS 7671:2018 removed plastic from the acceptable list for consumer-unit enclosures because of internal-fire propagation risk. If your board is plastic and pre-2016, it is legal but no longer compliant with current standards - and for a landlord facing a next EICR it is a coded observation.

How the visit runs

Same-day or next-day power-off appointment where possible; the fitting itself is normally a three to four hour job for a straight swap. Longer where earthing needs upgrading (a common Thanet-Victorian-terrace requirement) or where the incoming tails need shortening back to the meter tails compartment. You get the certificate emailed the same evening; Part P notification to TDC follows through the competent-person scheme within 30 days.
