LED downlight retrofits with fire-hood ceilings, IP-rated garden and driveway lighting, and heritage-fitting rewires in listed Margate Old Town and Ramsgate West Cliff properties.
Replacing 50W GU10 halogens with 4-5W LED equivalents typically pays back in energy alone inside 18 months on a kitchen or living-room ceiling with 6-8 fittings. The install detail that matters is the fire-hood: fire-rated LEDs plus a compliant intumescent hood restore the 30 or 60 minute ceiling rating that a downlight cutout would otherwise breach. On any first-floor ceiling below a bedroom, this is mandatory under Approved Document B - not optional.
Modern LED downlights include a self-resetting thermal cutout. Over-insulated lofts (common in the 2010s retrofit-insulation wave across Thanet) can push the cutout past its threshold; the fitting appears "dead" but is actually thermally tripped. Loft-side cowl caps on the upper surface of the fitting, rated for direct insulation contact ("IC-rated"), fix it permanently. Not every fitting supports IC-rated operation - check before you buy.
IP65 minimum for anything wall-mounted below eaves; IP67 for buried garden runs. Salt-air on the north-facing Thanet seafronts corrodes brass connections rapidly; we spec 316 stainless or fully potted junctions. LED strip in an aluminium profile survives; naked strip fails inside a season on the CT7-CT9 coast.
Margate Old Town has a working stock of 19th-century pendant fittings, brass wall sconces and original ceiling roses. The fitting itself is often the treasured object; the wiring inside it is 60-year-old rubber flex that is well past life. We rewire the fitting internals in modern silicone-insulated flex (aesthetically indistinguishable, materially compliant with BS 7671) rather than replace the fitting.
